Porn/Erotica Magazine Resource List for Writers
Click here to read advice on starting
to publish erotica/porn.
P - Porn; E - Erotica
(These are only vague labels, of course, but for market purposes,
among other things, porn pays much better, and the writing quality is
much worse. Go figure. On the other hand, you can put your own name
on the erotica.)
LAST UPDATED -- April 14, 2004
As always, additions/corrections appreciated. Please verify
addresses before sending them to me -- many of these magazines seem
rather temperamental that way. -- Mary Anne

Guides to Writing Erotica/Porn
- Elements of Arousal: How to Write and Sell Gay Men's Erotica (W)
- by Lars Eighner
- A reader comments: "Wonderful book. Not just
for
erotica, not just for gay writers. He's expanded it to include
information on other disciplines. He puts you through lots of logical
thought exercises and includes a long section on how to format your
manuscript for publication. A very good all-around book. I've read it
three times now, and published some gay erotica."
- "Writing Erotica for Fun and Profit"; Dennis J Lubrano
(sundad@kcii.com)
- This package on how to sell porn ($49.95 for the
complete package, $29.95 for the video only) may be helpful to those who
want a step-by-step guided tour of the entire process. The full package
includes a 75-page manual, a list of magazines that publish erotica, a
70-minute video, and an offer to critique your first manuscript. The
video is of the author reading aloud the manual, with visual examples.
It's a fairly basic approach, but reasonably complete, especially
regarding the business end of the process. The manual covers: Stationery,
Handwritten vs. Typed, Query Letters, Writer's Guidelines, Margin
Guidelines, Synopsis, Examples, Research, Reference Material, Creating a
Story Line, Description and Mood, Writer's Block, Pseudonyms, Payment,
Reference Guide to Adult Publishers, Sample Letter and Logs, and Sexciting
Words that Sizzle. It is oriented towards the adult porn magazine market,
rather than the erotic anthology market, although there is some
information that is helpful to both, regarding mechanics of submitting
stories. Certainly, much of this information is available on-line, but
this packet does organize it and delineate the process.
1/99 update: There's a $10 version now - contact sundad@kcii.com for
details.
- Katy Terrega's Free Newsletter for Writers of Porn and
Erotica
- A
resource for writers, Katy's newsletter features advice and information on
all aspects of the porn genre. Short story contests, updated paying
markets, how-to's, articles and book excerpts; appropriate for both
amateur and professional porn writers. Take a look at the most recent
issue here
or send any
email here to sign up
for Katy's interactive newsletter.
Other Resources
- Guild of Erotic Writers
- Exists to support and advise writers
of erotica, including poetry, films, novels and short stories. It has
been in existence since 1995, when it was founded in conjunction with
Erotic Stories magazine. Since 1997, the Guild has been run by the
independent partnership CTCK. For various reasons things have been a
bit quiet for about a year, but the Guild is now relaunching. For more
details, contact Zak@missdemeanour.idps.co.uk.

letter centre. It appears that the payment for their PO Box has run out
and all the contents had to be returned as they hadn't collected their
mail for some time." (3/03)
- Legal advice: Brad Bunnin (bradbunnin@attbi.com)
- a lawyer who
states that "Working with sex-positive, creative people is a special

- writer update 5/30/01: "I sent them a story a few years ago. No
reply, and I kinda forgot about the story and/or got out of a porn-writing
phase, or just too damned lazy to write and say what's up guys. Then a
got a very nice email from an assistant editor, who said a previous editor
had left my story unread in his desk, they just found it and loved it, he
apologized profusely for the delay, and could they still publish the story
in MACH (one of their mags)? I said of course, and it was published 4
months later (sometime later anyway) and I received a sample copy. Got
payment ($100) another 4 months later. Their guidelines said not to
expect payment right away, so I didn't bug them at all about payment.
Lo and behold, the check bounced, and my bank charges me $15 bounced
check fee. I Emailed Brush Creek about it, but no reply. Emailed them
again, no reply. Called them, left message on their accountant's voice
mail. No reply. Emailed again. No reply. Emailing YOU this time, in
hopes you'll spread the word to other writers to stay the hell away from
Brush Creek, who cost THIS writer $15 to be published in their magazine!
Vengeance shall be mine!"
-
writer update 10/01: "I read the comments about Brush Creek
Media. I'm not surprised. Last year, I sent them a story, waited six
months and no reponse. When I called them, they apologized, said my story
had gotten "lost", that they received so many stories, and would look for
it. About a month later, they sent me a letter apologizing again, said
something about new editors and that they found the story but couldn't use
it but that they would keep it on file for possible future use. I told
them no thanks, that I was submitting the story elsewhere. I did and sold
it, too."

an email to editor Cecilia Tan asking about the status of my story. I got
an autoresponse, saying she was backlogged in her email reading and she'd
respond in a few weeks. Nothing, not a few weeks later, not another year

All stories must have graphic sex and narrative line that give the

For Women (E)
(forum@nasnet.co.uk - queries only! no e-mail subs)
Portland Publishing Ltd
PO Box 381
4 Selsdon Way
London, E14 9GL
Fiction Editor: Elizabeth Coldwell
- This is a woman's sex magazine that prefers erotic literature over
out and out porn. Usual taboos apply.
- "Thank you for your query regarding our fiction slot. Whilst we hope
that your story will be as individual and original as possible we would
like t offer the following points as a framework in which you should
attempt to work.
- "We are looking for pieces of between 2,000-3,000 words. We are
allowed to be
explicit in the language we use, but the erotic content should be sensual,
rather than crude.
- "We are not allowed to print stories which deal with anything illegal,
including under-age sex, anal sex (unless those taking part are over 18
and
in private - i.e. no threesomes!) incest, bestiality, anything which
features extreme violence or appears to glorify rape or the use of force
in
a sexual encounter, or plots involving characters having sex while under
the
influence of hypnosis, as this is classed by our distributors as a
non-consensual act. References to recreational drug taking are not
permitted.
- "Stories with a gay/lesbian theme, or those which deal with mild
bondage/SM,
are acceptable, as long as it is made clear that both partners are willing
participants.
- "Some attempt should be made to incorporate a plot. Detailed
descriptions of
sexual encounters are often very erotic, but our readers also like
believable characters and an imaginative setting for the action. Try hard
to
avoid 'The Norm', wherein the narrator, who typically 'never used to
believe
those stories in magazines' suddenly and implausibly encounters their
dream
sexual partner at the door saying they have come to borrow a cup of
sugar/mend the video/ask directions; and promptly bonks their lights out.
As
For Women's readership is overwhelmingly female, they are not interested
in
cartoon nymphomaniacs or men's magazine-style exaggerated descriptions of
bodily parts.
- "Please also try to avoid the following plot twists, which we receive
more
frequently than any other, and which have become increasingly hard to
render
in an original or surprising way:
- Woman has sexual encounter with a 'stranger' who turns out to be her
husband/regular partner
- Woman has sexual encounter with a stranger who turns out to be a
ghost/vampire
- Man has sexual encounter with a 'woman' who turns out to be a man.
- Woman has sexual encounter which appears to be a dream but, on waking,
discovers some piece of evidence which leads her to believe this is not
the
case...
- "As the magazine deals primarily with the enjoyment of sex, we are not
looking for stories in which a character's motivation is to extract
revenge
for a previous sexual wrong, or in which a character is punished in some
way
for expressing their sexuality. With vary rare exceptions, we do not use
stories which feature the death of a character.

- one writer says, for Gallery and Fox, "I used to place material with
them, but I don't submit to them anymore, mainly because Barry Janoff
is a jerk. Rose Rubin Rivera, the fiction editor, might be okay,
however. I've never dealt with her. Still, it would have to be
listed as a good market: $400 for stories for 2000-2500."
- another writer says "they paid either $400 or $500 a story. Neither
one
of them is very dedicated to the integrity of the story (meaning, they
changed a *lot*)"
- 4/18/98 update; Rose Rubin Rivera is no longer working at Gallery

Genesis (P)
- "pays an arbitrary scale, usually in the neighborhood of$350 for a
story of less than 2000 words, although I've been paid as llittle as
$300 and as much as $400 for a story or article. Receive check about
60 days after acceptance. Wants 'realistic fiction', whatever the
hell that is. Very arbitrary about returning submissions. Usually,
if I don't hear from them in 90 days, I drop them a short note, saying
I'm submitting the story elsewhere. If they want it, that generally
gets them off the stick. If they don't want it, you're free to submit
elsewhere. _Genesis_ has half a dozen other magazines, but they don't
seem to have any stability, so it is hard to deterine requirements. I
just send things to _Genesis_, and if it goes in another magazine,
they tell me."
- writer talked with Mike McPadden, new Managing Editor (7/96). He
said "they aren't publishing much fiction anymore. However he *did*
commission me to write two non-fiction pieces for them, for $400
each. The "On the Couch" section he tells me, is now written
in-house. I suspect that means they commission someone to do it. The
magazine has more of a cutting edge feel to it, rather than the young
professional image they were cultivating a few years ago. Video is
playing a large part in their reportage....He tells me they need quite
a few short pieces for the front section on entertainment."

- new address, 7/96; length about 2500 words. They also publish
several other mags, _Sugah_ has African American models, _Plumpers_ and
_Big Women_ ($200-$300, 3000+) feature Rubenesque models, _Candidly
Yours_ features "amateurs" and _Nugget_ ($200-$250, 2000-3000) has a
fetish slant, _Petite_ ($200-$250, 2000-3000) aims for "small, slim and
sexy", _Dude_ ($150-$250) focuses on gay males, and they also publish
_Leg Scene_.
- "Steve Dorfman is a nice guy, very friendly on the phone, but they're
slow -- I gave him a rewrite on one story for Leg Scene three months ago,
and they expressed interest in a story for Oriental Women back in April,
but I've heard nil since. They have multiple editors, btw; I know Steve
doesn't handle Oriental Women."
- 1/99 update: They've announced that they're no longer publishing
Oriental Women. They list their magazines as Gent, Nugget, Plumpers & Big
Women, Dude, and Petite. Sugah and Leg Scene may also be closed. A
writer also notes that they still hadn't paid him for a story in the
October Gent, and that they haven't responded to his e-mails.
- 3/99 update: Firestone Publishing has declared bankruptcy and gone
out of business, so no more "Gent", etc.
- 6/00 update: Magazine has been sold back to Dugent Corporation, and
while they're not paying Firestone's debts, they are buying more
fiction, paying $250 on publication for about 2500 words; they're
overstocked and buying sparingly. Nugget has also been revived. Not
sure about other magazines in this set.

different styles and periods and appealing to a broad readership.
- "We are always looking for new authors. If you'd like to try your hand
at writing a book for possible inclusion in the Delta list, here are our
basic guidelines: we are looking for novels of approximately 75,000 words
whose purpose is to inspire the sexual imagination of the reader. The
erotic content should not describe illegal sexual activity (pedophilia for
example). The novel should contain sympathetic and interesting characters,
pace, atmosphere and an intriguing storyline.
- "If you would like to have a go please submit to the Editor a sample
of
at least 10,000 words, clearly typed in double-lined spacing on one side

of today (May 18, 1999) I still haven't heard from them, nor have I
received any payment for my letters. I know they pay on publication, but
this is ridiculous. About a month ago I mailed them copies of the letters

- publishes four men's magazines: Score, Voluptuous, Naughty Neighbors
(all three 13 times a year), and Leg Sex (bimonthly, Editor, Joe Monks).
-
SCORE/VOLUPTUOUS/NAUGHTY NEIGHBORS/LEG SEX: We recommend studying sample
copies (available on the newsstand or send $7, which includes shipping &
handling, to this office) of the magazines. Fiction pieces should be
written in a first-or third-person-style narrative. Fiction stories should
be written in a professional manner and contain at least two sex scenes,
the first scene beginning within the first four pages. Send manuscripts by
mail to our editorial offices for consideration. Please provide SASE. We
report in four weeks. Send hard copy of fiction submissions. We especially
need non-fiction subject matter about male sexual interests such as male
sexual health subjects or traditional male entertainment (i.e., gambling).
We suggest querying first on non-fiction submissions, but unsolicited
manuscripts are welcome.
-
SUBJECT NEEDS FOR SCORE/VOLUPTUOUS: Both magazines showcase big-breasted
nude models. The main female character should have huge breasts, and the
story should focus on detailed descriptions of her breasts with lots of
tit-play. The readers should be able to easily identify with the main male
character. The female characters in Voluptuous have to be naturally
endowed (no augmentation) and can be somewhat on the plump side. Subject
matter for SCORE's non-fiction pieces include on-location reports for porn
shoots, reviews of strip clubs (major, international cities only please),
etc. As mentioned above, please query first regarding non-fiction topics.
-
SUBJECT NEEDS FOR NAUGHTY NEIGHBORS: Naughty Neighbors showcases only
unpublished amateur models of all ages and all types, usually in at-home,
girl-next-door situations. Stories should stress exhibitionism, voyeurism,
swinging, encounters (i.e., bored housewife's tryst with a mailman), and
other similar themes. As mentioned above, please query first regarding
non-fiction topics.
-
SUBJECT NEEDS FOR LEG SEX: Leg Sex is a kinky fetish magazine that focuses
on hips, heels and all points in-between. Fiction stories should focus on
fetishes (author should have a strong understanding of leg or foot
fetishes) and/or light female domination. Non-fiction stories can focus on
such topics as leg/foot fashion, foot-binding, performance art, etc.
Word Count: 2500-4000 (double-spaced).
Pay Scale: $350-$500 (payment upon publication, which buys one-time
rights).
- Note: With the exception of Leg Sex, Canadian censorship restrictions
apply. Taboo subject matter includes degradation, pain, bondage, and
pregnancy. (!)
- 12/98 update: A writer notes: "I usually deal with [name deleted by
request], sometimes with Manuel Pila. Professional and speedy; I sold
them two stories, and everything went smoothly -- not a word of editing on
the second. They seem to have acquired some new titles, Babyface (teens)
and 30Something ("older" women), but I don't know their fiction needs. My
guidelines say Leg Sex is monthly, btw."

bondage type scenarios. Includes Dom/sub, mind control,
non-consensual/rape, FemDom, fantasy, M/M, F/F. Anything well written
will be considered, but the main focus is bondage, and "the not so

- Poetry must be erotic in nature, b&d oriented a major plus, no
depressing prose will be considered. Short, to the point, sexual, sensual,
not necessarily "graphic". We are in need of more stories than poetry at
the moment, so send no more than 5 at a time.

They take 3000-4000 word stories and pay $150; I sold a story to Amateur

Velvet-Rose Press
Postfach 1107
D-27314 Hoya
Germany
Velvet-Rose Press publishes high quality erotica in the Limited
Edition and Small Press Market in English, French and German as well as
dual-text. All forms of well written erotica are considered and editors
are available to work with writers on a personal basis to bring works to a
high standard. Guidelines are available from either e-mail:
litterateur@t-online.de or snail-mail.
From the publisher: "Velvet-Rose Press has published some 246 small
works of erotic fiction covering all legal areas of the genre in the last
few years. Works published under the name Velvet-Rose Press are either
commissioned or accepted works, there are no *published for money* or
vanity works. In recent years there have been problems with some US-based
writers thanks to someone stealing our name briefly (see below) and -
thanks to the USPS - problems with distribution of published works to the
US. The editors are considering starting to publish for the US market in
English once more, perhaps later on in this year.
At present the publishing books are full, although Velvet-Rose Press will
consider high quality works for publication in 2005 / 2006 should the US
market become available again. Our present publishing programme has
thirteen titles planned for the first quarter of this year (2004) which
have already been sold out. We tend to publish in a limited edition of
between 150 and 250 copies of each title.
Later on this year Velvet-Rose Press is moving into larger premises - the
100 sqm offices are far too small for the works being produced and a new
370 sqm building has been purchased.
Telephoned questions cannot be answered; our telephone number has changed
and is unlisted. E-mail submissions are accepted, and questions by e-mail
will be answered wherever possible.
The Press Group does undertake editing and printing work for others as a
normal publisher on a pure commission basis, but only under the name of
the commissioning agent / publisher and not under any name belonging to
the Press Group. It makes no promises of high sales; sells nothing on
behalf of the commissioning person and doesn't issue an ISBN number or
similar for such works.
We have also become very careful in the manner in which we deal with
customers over the last few years, as someone used names belonging to the
Group and accepted money in the Group's name without producing any product
and without being linked in anyway to the Group. To the best of our
knowledge this person is no longer active - certainly not in this area -
and this is one of the reasons we are now considering entering the US
market once more.
Having been out of the US market for some time, we are also interested in
making contacts with booksellers in the US who handle erotica in order to
deliver our books to a hopefully eager public!" -- 1/28/04

- WHAT TO DO FIRST
"If you're interested in submitting a piece of writing to WHAP! Magazine,
we must first insist that you familiarize yourself with our unique style.
You can do so by reading all of the story selections posted at our website
or by purchasing the magazine. If you are then inspired to write for us -
or think you have something in your files that might appeal to us - we
encourage you to either query us or send us your submission. If you are
not familiar with the style of the magazine, please do not submit to us.
- THE KIND OF WRITING WE WANT TO BUY (HINT, HINT)
We are most interested in writing that has the flavor of a 1940s-50s
women's magazine, such as Good Housekeeping or Women's Home Companion.
Keep in mind that 90% of what we publish is written from a woman's
perspective for a female audience. This can include things like...
- "How to" articles on any method of maternal discipline
- "How to" articles on housework, cooking and other forms of
hubbywork
- Profiles of maternal disciplinarians (photos are a big plus)
- Interviews with maternal disciplinarians (your local
dominatrix? Include photos)
- Short stories with a maternal discipline theme (especially
from the perspective of a female first-person narrator)
- Practical, imaginative punishment assignments for naughty
hubbies to complete
- Disciplinary dilemmas (especially domestic scenarios that
evoke the "Can This Marriage Be Saved"/Ladies Home Journal
style)
- TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Unlike some women, size does not matter to us. We'll buy your novella if
it inspires us and we might also buy your advice tidbit or top ten list.
Your submission must only be typewritten and heartfelt. Send it to us via
e-mail, snail mail, or on a floppy disk. Submissions accompanied by photos
or illustrations will be given special consideration - and command a
higher fee. Please include an appropriately sized SASE if you would like
your manuscript returned.
- WHEN YOU CAN EXPECT TO HEAR BACK FROM US
Give us 90 days to contact you, though you may hear from us well before
then. Please don't nag us.
- PAYMENT AND RIGHTS
Generally speaking, we pay $100 upon acceptance for submissions over 500
words. For submissions less than 500 words (top ten lists, punishment
assignments) we pay $50 upon acceptance. We pay double these amounts for
submissions accompanied by good quality artwork or photographs.
Our writers also receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which
their submission appears.
- Once we purchase your submission, we own all rights to it."
